That's right...stop, and take a deep breath! Let's take a minute to appreciate some of the things we've accomplished in class recently: You took the first Unit Test...and everyone did really well! I'm very pleased with the scores. We are just about finished with the first DBQ essay (or partial essay anyways--training wheels, remember??). And, we met for the first Extra Credit Movie Party...which was really fun! The good news is that all of the strategies that helped you be successful in the first 6 weeks of class will continue to help you succeed for the rest of the year. So, like the shampoo bottle says, "Lather, rinse, and repeat!" Or, in other words, keep up the good work--we're off to a terrific start.

This week we will head into the 1750s to fight the French & Indian War before starting on the Road to Revolution for the American colonies. We also have a night class on Monday night from 6 - 9 p.m. in Room 108. Snacks will be provided and I'm looking forward to covering a lot of ground.
This Week's Question:
What is something you have learned to do well without formal teaching?
How did you learn it? (this could be a sport, hobby, musical
instrument, etc.)
I have the ability to read, specifically pleasure books, in any setting. I can literally tune out the world. So much so, that if there was a huge party at my house, music blarring in the car or people constantly talking, I have somehow learned to ignore all of these distractions and actually only hear and see what is actually taking place in the book! Crazy right?! I suppose I learned how to do this since I read novels 24/7, and have to deal with whatever enviroment I'm in at the moment, because I never can put down a good book :)
ReplyDeleteTeach me your ways oh wise one!!!!!!
DeleteI have learned selective hearing through my years of living. I can hear what i want to hear and drown out what i dont! So if my mom says to clean my room, i might just not hear it! I guess i learned how when i was constantly in trouble at home or at school (dont tell my mom please) :)
ReplyDeleteI hate to break it to you, but...I'm pretty sure your mom has figured out your special talent! Funny how quite a few teenagers (and maybe more than one or two husbands) develop the ability to filter out certain female voices! :) ha! ha! I really appreciate your honesty in these blog responses!
ReplyDeleteI learned the mathematics in pokemon on my own. With a guidebook in my bedroom and the pokemon forums, I learned the exact mathematical measurements of a critical hit and specific moves. Most of this self-teaching allowed me to enter and win the video game tournaments I entered later. My love for this game was so powerful, that I dedicated seven-eight years of my life to learning the skills and powers of all the pokemon. I plan on continuing my quest to be a pokemon master!
ReplyDeleteYou go, Alex!! So can you help me on my math homework?!? haha :)
DeleteWill you get a cool certificate or a job offer once you become a pokemon master??
DeleteWell, I was in band in six grade and I learned how to pick out the different instruments in an orchestra when they all play at the same time. Then I taught myself how to play the piano by ear; I can listen to a song and then play it on the piano, but it usally takes more than one try. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty handy talent! Maybe you can be in a band again someday...
